Washington, DC
I attended the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) conference in December of this past year. At the conference, I was able to room with a fellow LEND trainee training to be a Speech Language Pathologist. Together, with 5 other LEND trainees, we were able to attend poster sessions, podium discussions, and panel discussions. I learned about waivers and community services, communication systems, and the latest research occurring across the nation. In our evenings, we were able to tour the national monuments and enjoy some delicious food, too.

Salt Lake City, Utah
I also had the opportunity to travel to Salt Lake City over the summer between my first and second year of training. On an internship with Myriad Genetics, I was able to learn about genetic testing, laboratory logistics and functions, and oncology genetics. Together with 10 other genetic counseling students, I hiked to the top of a mountain, viewed the saltiest body of water outside of the Dead Sea, and met a ton of great genetic counselors. I also fulfilled my lifelong dream of seeing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (look them up, they're amazing!).

Nashville, Tennessee
During our first year of training, my classmates and I took a trip to Nashville over spring break. We wanted a break from academics, an opportunity to make memories, and something completely unrelated to genetics. And we made that happen. We went to the Country Music Hall of Fame, we ate some fantastic farm-to-table food at restaurants in Eastern Nashville, we listened to awesome live music, and we took the wrong interstate to get there and drove an extra 2 hours (oops).

Managua, Nicaragua
I went to Nicaragua with a team from the LEND program. We spent a week working at a center for children with developmental disabilities. I personally spent my days with a developmental pediatrician, providing medical care and psychosocial counseling. I was able to help out with horse therapy and observe their classrooms and interventions. In our evenings, we ate a ton of plantains, enjoyed the local wine, and shopped at the local markets. Highlights include an active volcano, fried chicken delivered on the back of a motorcycle, and fruit flavored marshmallows.

Seattle, Washington
We traveled to Seattle this past fall for the National Society of Genetic Counselor's (NSGC) annual conference. Our second year class was able to attend the conference to network with other professionals, learn about up and coming research and hot topics, and develop ourselves professionally. We were able to be tourists while we were there and see the market, space needle, Chihuly glass exhibits, and aquarium. Not only did my classmates and I get to foster professional growth, we became even closer to one another.

Cleveland, Ohio
I spent my summer in Cleveland, which for me is home. I completed my summer internship in prenatal counseling. I was able to spend 40 hours a week working with two genetic counselors who have been working in the field for many years. I was able to grow, personally and professionally, in a city that has a permanent place in my heart. The view wasn't half bad either.

Cincinnati, Ohio
I've had the privilege to spend the last two years learning, growing, and thriving in Cincinnati, OH. A land filled with great food, great beer, and great friends. My classmates and I did a lot of really cool things while we've been here: happy hours, movies at the Esquire, music in the parks, climbing Carew tower, running along rivers and trails, biking across the city, seeing national parks, a variety of festivals, and so much more.
